Yarn Storage: Neat Ideas and Solutions for Storing Yarn
86Yarn Storage Solutions: Tips and Ideas for Storing Yarn
If you are a crafter who works with yarn, sooner or later, you'll find yourself longing for ways to organize and store your yarn.
Many people buy yarn when it is on sale or find a stash at a yard sale and grab multiple skeins at a time. Others buy their yarn in lots. Die-hard crafters can amass a large collection of yarn for future projects. Sooner or later, though, if you are into the fiber arts, you will find you need a way to store your yarn.
Having the right storage containers can help you to keep your yarn stash orderly. Many different types of storage containers are available and it helps to be aware of what's available, which, in the long run, can make things so much easier for those of us who love working with yarn.
This Hub offers ideas for yarn storage products, whether it be for one ball or for an entire roomful!.

Yarn Holder/Tainer
Ever had your yarn go scooting down a staircase? What a nuisance!
For those who have longed for something to hold a single ball of yarn in, so that it doesn't shoot across the floor and wind itself around the nearest table leg, a yarn holder or tainer, as it is called, can be a godsend.
These smooth containers have a snap-on lids with a holes in them for easy dispensing of yarn. Larger containers are also available, as pictured to the right, for holding additional balls of yarn.
Yarn holders/tainers are a great way to store and dispense yarn, preventing it from becoming tangled, knotted, and rolling around.

Storage Bags With Snaps
If you have a cat, you know how "curious kitty" is attracted like a magnet to small balls of yarn which kitty thinks are play objects. Storage bags with snaps can keep your frisky feline at bay.
Storage bags with snaps can also be actually purchased. (This was a new one to me.) You can find the odd one on Ebay. If you have odds and ends of yarn, these bags make short work of keeping everything orderly.
Tip: I like COMFORTER BAGS. They are made from heavy plastic and come complete with a snap lid, which makes them perfect for storing yarn. These bags are often discarded but can be a good storage container.

Portable Yarn Drum
You've placed a cloth tote down, only to find it was wet (on the bottom) because a porch was soaked--or it is raining outside and water pours directly into the top of your tote!.
A yarn drum is a handy container because you can carry up to eight balls of your yarn with you. The lid has an opening for easy yarn retrieval and the drum includes an accessory pouch + a mesh pocket for pattern books. A handle allows you to carry this drum in a couple of ways--in your hand or over the shoulder. A sensible feature of these drums is the PVC bottom, which protects your yarn against moisture.

Plastic Bin Containers
While theoretically, you could try to stack your yarn skeins in the corner of a room or up against a wall, (only to have them tip over and arrange themselves haphazardly across the floor or carpet) it is far easier to simply place them in the appropriate containers.
If you have a craft room, lidded plastic bin containers or stackable bin containers are ideal. They make great yarn organizers, and because they are clear, you see your yarn colors at a glance--very handy when you are looking for a particular shade.
Lidded stackable bin containers are matching and as your yarn stash grows, new bin containers can easily be added.

Lined Wicker Baskets
Trying to carry an armload of yarn can be tricky.
One of my favorites for yarn storage is a large lined wicker basket. These look homey and attractive and if you don't have room for shelving or haven't gotten around to installing it yet, a large wicker basket can be a convenient container for your yarn.
Tip: A handled basket is even better because it's portable! You can move your yarn stash to whatever part of the house you are working on a project in.

Storage Bins With Lids
If you ever have to move, these large containers are ideal for transporting your yarn--and best of all, everything is already packed!
Storage bins with lids offer a convenient way to store yarn you won't be using for awhile. These bins are stackable so can be placed in a closet. They are not generally considered as attractive-looking as some of the items mentioned above but if you have a spare closet, these are a good choice for yarn storage. I like the lids because my yarn can be stored for long periods of time and remains clean and dust free.

Hanging Closet Organizers
Ouch, an aching back! Not anymore, when you choose hanging storage containers.
Hanging closet organizers can be a great storage tool for yarn skeins. If you do not have room on the floor of your closet for bins, hanging storage organizers can offer a solution. You can organize everything and because these are at arm's length, you don't have to bend to hunt up your yarn.
Tip: check how deep these are before ordering to ensure your yarn skeins will fit.

Wow, those tainers and the tote bag look amazing! I currently have my yarn stacked in a corner lol and it totally ends up all over the place, not to mention it collects dust. Thank you so much for this, I've been dying to get my yarn organized for eons!
I have always had problems organizing my yarns. This hub gives several really great tips. Thank you for sharing.
I use several of your ideas above but mainly in wooden shoe cubbies that are built into my closet. I have few shoes and lots of yarn! I love the baskets with the liners for my favorite yarns but they work better if you have a built-ins/cubbies to store them. If they sit out too long your skeins with be dusty. Thanks for posting!

Hi Scarebare,
I'm fortunate to have a room that has shelving, which was becoming a catch-all for my yarn but I found this wasn't workable because my yarn wasn't nearby. I like using my large basket because I can move my yarn, hooks, and current pattern all over the house. I want some tainers, too, so that my yarn doesn't tangle--and now that I've found them, I want a yarn winder. wonderful that they have these products.
