By Athlyn Green
Glaze icing is so tempting, drizzled over cakes, squares or sweet breads. Perhaps you would like to make a glaze for homemade donuts?
Glaze is a favorite topping for many deserts and while it is seen in bakeries, how do you make your own glaze?
It's very easy to make glaze icing. You can make a glaze at home using everyday ingredients.
Glaze Icing Recipe
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1/4 milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Melt butter in small pot, the add sugar and stir until it is dissolved
- Add in milk and bring mixture to a soft boil, stirring constantly to prevent sticking for 2-5 minutes. Reduce heat so that icing doesn't burn but maintain temperature so that it boils and thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 tsp. vanilla.
How to Use Glaze Icing
Use your glaze immediately because it will harden as it cools and form a crust, which is what glaze is supposed to do but you don't want this to happen while it is still in the pot.
Glaze icing can be used to decorate cakes or sweet breads or is nice drizzled over muffins, cinnamon rolls or hot-cross buns.
Maple Walnut Glaze Icing
Using the recipe above, substitute maple flavoring for the vanilla extract.
Use a nut chopper to chop 1/2-1 cup of walnuts and stir into glaze right before spreading.
